Reflective Clothing & Headlamps are a must for Nighttime runs
Reflective Clothing & Headlamps are a must for Nighttime runs

As we move into the summer months and you start logging those miles preparing for your fall running goals, we’re going to discuss runner safety and runner etiquette.

In a perfect world, we all get along, giving each other space and collectively share concern for everyone's safety and the greater good.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep yourself and others safe.

  1. Wear bright or reflective clothing, and or lights when running in the early mornings or in the evening.

  2. When running in a busy area, consider running single file to help create space on sidewalks and trails, especially if you’re running in a group.

  3. “On Your Left” - This might be a little bit of a 2b), but communication as you approach someone on a sidewalk or path is to yell “on your left” to let them know you are coming and will pass them on the left side.

  4. Run on the opposite side of the road if possible to face traffic.

  5. Be predictable at intersections or when crossing the road. Only cross when safe to do so, or at stop lights and stop signs.

  6. Let someone know when and where you will be running.  Safety first.

Speaking from experience, I find that an effective way to help share this type of stuff with other runners is by doing these things yourself, and hopefully, just by trying to keep yourself safe, you will help others stay safe as well.
